TEXT: 1 JOHN 5:1-4
TITLE: SEEING IS BELIEVING DOING
INTRODUCTION
- People were using their human knowledgeto definewho Jesus was
- Paul countered their human knowledgeto defineJesus with the personal testimoniesof those who had a relationshipwith Jesus
- This led to tensions in John’s day between Fact and Faith
- The Jesus of History versus the Christ of Faith
- The Humanity of Jesus versus the Divinity of Jesus
- Greek Dualism: spirit is good and matter is evil
- Since God is spirit (good), God did not created the material world (evil)
- Docetism: Deity cannot unite with anything material (like a body).
Therefore, Jesus did not have a physical body
- Accordingly, Jesus was not born, Jesus did not suffer, Jesus did not die,
and Jesus did not resurrect from the dead
- 1 Corinthians 15:3, 4, “3 For I delivered to you first of all that which I also received: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, 4 and that He was buried, and that He rose again the third day according to the Scriptures”
- Those tensions are still present today…
