THERE’S GOOD WORK TO BE DONE AND WE ALL HAVE A PART – REV. DR. DEMETRIA C. MCCROSKEY, ED.D – 02-01-2026

TEXT: Nehemiah 2: 11-18

TITLE: There’s Good Work to Be Done and We All Have a Part

When God calls us to rebuild the broken walls around us—our families, our faith, our neighborhoods—God invites all of us to put on our spiritual hard hats. Under the power of the Holy Spirit, everybody has work to do in the building of the Kingdom.

Point 1 – SEE IT: The Power of Honest Vision (v. 11–13)

Before rebuilding, Nehemiah first took time to see the ruins.

  • Faith begins with truth-telling. We can’t heal what we won’t face.
  • Liberation starts with looking deeply at the brokenness—our walls, our systems, our silence.
  • Like Nehemiah walking the walls at night, God calls us to take a quiet inventory of injustice and neglect, not just in Jerusalem, but in our own communities.

Speak to the Cracks—those who see the brokenness but feel unseen themselves. Show them that their tears are blueprints for God’s rebuilding work.

Point 2 – SAY IT: The Power of Communal Call (v. 17–18a)

Nehemiah didn’t keep his vision to himself—he gathered the people and named both the problem, the project, and the possibility with God.

  • Prophetic leadership calls the community into holy action.
  • The work of healing and transformation isn’t a solo mission; it’s the Spirit activating a people for Kingdom purpose.
  • This is where preaching meets organizing—the Word meets workbench.

Speak to the Corners—those visible but disconnected. Let them hear that they are vital, seen, and needed in the work of restoration.

Point 3 – START IT: The Power of Active Faith (v. 18b)

After Nehemiah says, “Let us rise up and build,” the people respond, “Let’s start rebuilding.” So they strengthened their hands for the good work.

  • This is faith with a hammer in hand—obedience that builds justice.
  • Transformation happens when we put our prayers into plans and our hearts into hands-on work.
  • When the Spirit empowers us, even the smallest act becomes sacred labor in the Kingdom.
