TEXT: JOHN 13:33-35

TITLE: JESUS LOVES ME THIS I KNOW. FOR THE BIBLE TELLS ME SO

INTRODUCTION

A. Some humans live based on the law of reciprocity

B. Jesus presses us to a deeper level relating to love

HOW DOES JESUS LOVE ME?

A. Ephesians 3:17-19 Multidimensionally

17 that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; that you, being rooted and grounded in love, 18 may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the width and length and depth and height – 19 to know the love of Christ which passes knowledge; that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.

B. Ephesians 5:1, 2 Sacrificially

1 Therefore be imitators of God as dear children. 2 And walk in love, as Christ also has loved us and given Himself for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweet-smelling aroma.

C. Romans 8:35-39 Inseparably

35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? 36 As it is written: “For Your sake we are killed all day long; We are accounted as sheep for the slaughter.” 37 Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us. 38 For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, 39 nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

HOW SHOULD I LOVE OTHERS?

A. Romans 12:10 With mutual affection

10 love one another with mutual affection; outdo one another in showing honor.

(NRSV)

B. 1 John 3:18 In deed and in truth

18 My little children, let us not love in word or in tongue, but in deed and in truth

C. 1 John 3:16, 17 Laying down my life for them

16 By this we know love, because He laid down His life for us. And we also ought to lay down our lives for the brethren. 17 But whoever has this world’s goods, and sees his brother in need, and shuts up his heart from him, how does the love of God abide in him?

D. Romans 13:8-10 As a debt to be paid

8 Owe no one anything except to love one another, for he who loves another has fulfilled the law. 9 For the commandments, “You shall not commit adultery,” “You shall not murder,” “You shall not steal,” “You shall not bear false witness,” “You shall not covet,” and if there is any other commandment, are all summed up in this saying, namely, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” 10 Love does no harm to a neighbor; therefore love is the fulfillment of the law.
