TEXT: ROMANS 5:12-21
TITLE: IMPUTED - IMPUTED - IMPUTED
INTRODUCTION
A. There are (CHURCHED/UNCHURCHED people who don’t really believe in
GOD and their need of a Savior (Rom 1:18-32)!
B. The Apostle Paul has given us a complete account of why “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God”( Rom 3:23) and a detailed explanation of the gospel (good news) message. I will use this simple format to explain a complex issue.
HUMANKIND’S PROBLEM
A. The Original Sin (Rom 5:12-14; Gen 3:1-19). We are not sinners because
we sin; rather, we sin because we are sinners (Rom 6:23).
B. Imputed Sin (Rom 5:15-18; 1Cor. 15:22).
1. Imputed sin is Adam’s guilt attributed to or credited to us.
2. Imputed sin affects our standing before God (we are guilty, condemned).
3. Used both legally and financially to impute means “to designate any action, word, or thing as credited to another person’s account.”
4. Biblically, Adam’s sin WAS IMPUTED to all his descendants, and they are dealt with as guilty.
5. Because of Adam’s sin, humankind is subject to both spiritual death (Eph 2:1) and physical death (Rom 5:12). A total separation from God!
GOD’S REMEDY
A. The goods news regarding original and imputed sin is that God already had a remedy, a sovereign plan of salvation even before Adam sinned in the Garden of Eden. Jesus Christ was “the gift” that would provide propitiation (Rom 3:25), redemption (Rom3:24; 8:23), justification (Rom 4:25; 5:18) and sanctification (Rom 5:2; 15:16; John 14:16).
B. When Jesus suffered, bled and died on the cross; humankind’s sins were IMPUTED to Him.
1. The spotless and pure Lamb of God became the sin offering for the whole world (2 Cor. 5:14-21; Heb. 2:9; 1 John 2:2).
2. He bore the penalty for sin. God imputed the guilt of our sins to Jesus (Lev. 16:22, Isa. 53:4-6).
THE NEED FOR RIGHTEOUSNESS
A. THE RIGHTEOUSNESS OF CHRIST IS IMPUTED TO THOSE WHO ACCEPT THE FREE GIFT OF GOD (ROMANS 5:19-21, John 3:16).
B. Because of the atoning sacrifice of Jesus Christ; the believer (by faith) not only receives propitiation, redemption, justification and sanctification.
C. As a result of His atoning sacrifice, Christ’s righteousness is set to the believer’s account. ”The righteous of God” is credited to the person who puts his/her trust in the atoning sacrifice of Jesus Christ.
D. THIS IS WHAT MAKES A PERSON SAVED! This was true of Abraham (Gen 15:6; Rom 4:3). It is true of every believer in Christ (Ps. 32:2; Rom 3:22; 4:3, 8, 21-25; 2 Cor. 5:21).
CONCLUSION: I challenge every saint to be steadfast in knowing that “There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit (Romans 8:1).
