I AM WALKING IN MY AUTHORITY – PASTOR MARTIN CHILDS JR. D. MIN. – 09-06-2020

TITLE: I AM WALKING IN MY AUTHORITY

TEXT: MATTHEW 22:41-46

INTRODUCTION

A. This is Jesus’ last week on earth

B. Some people live arbitrary lives

C. I am sure that Jesus had moments of levity

D. However, there was a seriousness / relevance to everything that Jesus said and did…

JESUS ASKED THE QUESTION
A. It seemed like a simple question (“What do you think about the Christ? Whose Son is He?”)

B. The Pharisees gave a simple answer

1. “The Son of David.”
2. It was the correct answer

a. 2 Samuel 7:1-16
b. Psalm 89:3, 4, 34-36
c. Isaiah 9:6, 7
d. The Messiah/Christ would come through the bloodline of Davis
e. That would make the Messiah/Christ Davis’s son

3. However, it was not the complete answer

JESUS ASKED THE REAL QUESTION
A. “How then does David in the Spirit call Him ‘Lord,’”

1. Jesus is quoting Psalm 110:1, “The LORD said to my Lord, ‘Sit at My right hand, Till I make Your enemies Your footstool.’”
2. The LORD (Yᵉhôvâh) said to my Lord (ʼâdôwn)
3. The LORD (Yahweh) said to my Lord (Messiah)

B. “If David then calls Him ‘Lord,’ how is He his Son?”

1. If the Messiah/Christ was only a human, yet to be born, how could David call Him Lord?
2. The (Lord) is superior to the (son). If the Messiah/Christ is David’s son, how could Davis call him Lord?

C. The Pharisees would have to either acknowledge the deity of the Messiah/Christ or admit their ignorance

THE RELEVANCE OF THE QUESTION
A. The Pharisees viewed the Messiah/Christ as a human (Son of David). If the Messiah/Christ is a human, it diminishes His deity

B. Jesus desired that the Pharisees knew that the Messiah/Christ was Lord (Son of God), equal to Yᵉhôvâh, sitting at His right hand

C. The relevance of Jesus’ question for us

1. That we do not diminish Jesus’ deity
2. That we do live like Jesus is Lord of our lives

OUTCOME: And no one was able to answer Him a word, nor from that day on did anyone dare question Him anymore.
