TITLE: DEALING WITH DISTRACTIONS? FOLLOW JESUS

TEXT: LUKE 9:57-62

INTRODUCTION

1. Distractions – Divert your attention away from the more important thing
2. The devil uses distractions – To divert our attention away from God [the more

important thing] to something else [less important] THEN, control the outcome

1. It is therefore necessary for us to deal with our distractions and follow Jesus
2. Note: The people called Jesus, “Lord”
3. Calling Jesus “Lord” does not mean that He is Lord of my life
   1. Matt 7:21 - ²¹ “Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ shall enter

the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven.

2. Luke 6:46 - ⁴⁶ “But why do you call Me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and not do the

things which I say?

1. To Follow Jesus I must Sacrifice, Prioritize and Commit

SACRIFICE

1. ⁵⁷ Now it happened as they journeyed on the road, that someone said to Him,

“Lord, I will follow You wherever You go.”

1. ⁵⁸ And Jesus said to him, “Foxes have holes and birds of the air have nests, but

the Son of Man has nowhere to lay His head.”

1. What am I willing to sacrifice to follow Jesus?
2. I cannot stay where I am and follow Jesus…

PRIORITIZE

1. ⁵⁹ Then He said to another, “Follow Me.”
2. But he said, “Lord, let me first go and bury my father.”
3. ⁶⁰ Jesus said to him, “Let the dead bury their own dead, but you go and preach

the kingdom of God.”

1. Jesus appears to be insensitive…
2. It is not a matter of compassion; it is a matter of priority
3. We are called to life… (John 6:63-69)

COMMIT

1. ⁶¹ And another also said, “Lord, I will follow You, but let me first go and bid

them farewell who are at my house.”

1. ⁶² But Jesus said to him, “No one, having put his hand to the plow, and looking

back, is fit for the kingdom of God.”

1. If you are not going to do it, do not put your hands on it…

CHALLENGE FOR THE WEEK: THAT I WILL SIT AND LISTEN TO JESUS
