Come and See – Pastor Martin Childs Jr., D. Min

TEXT: JOHN 1:35-42

TITLE: “COME AND SEE…”

INTRODUCTION

  1. We live in an evidence-based society
  2. “Do not just tell me; show me…”
  3. How do we assist people today in coming to see Jesus?

THE INITIAL INVITATION

  1. John the Baptist, “Behold the Lamb of God”
    1. Two Disciples follow Jesus
    2. Jesus asks, “What do you seek or want?”
    3. The Disciples respond, “Where are you staying?”
    4. Jesus answers, “Come and see”
  2. The Disciples came and saw
    1. They remained with Jesus the rest of the day (from 4:00 p.m.)
    2. Jesus had no permanent residence (Matthew 8:20)
    3. Emphasis was not on what was there, but who was there – Jesus
  3. The initial invitation has already been extended to humanity
    1. Jesus is Emmanuel – “God with us” (Matthew 1:23)
    2. “The Word became flesh and dwelt among us” (John 1:14)

JESUS MINISTERS TO ME. I INVITE YOU…

  1. Andrew tells Simon (his brother)
    1. “We have found the Messiah / Christ
    2. Andrew brought Simon to Jesus (Come and See)
    3. Jesus, “Your name is Simon, but you shall be called Cephas (a

stone / Peter)

  1. Has Jesus ministered to you?
  2. Are you inviting others to “Come and See”
  3. It will change who they are…

PEOPLE RECEIVE THE INVITATION BECAUSE OF ME; BUT THEY RECEIVE JESUS BECAUSE OF JESUS

  1. Peter received and followed Jesus
  2. Reflect on Peter’s influence in the church
  3. Who in my sphere of influence needs to “Come and See” Jesus?
  4. How will they “Come and See” Jesus without me?

CHALLENGE FOR THE WEEK: THAT I WILL INVITE ONE PERSON TO “COME AND SEE” JESUS
