TEXT: JOHN 1:35-42
TITLE: “COME AND SEE…”
INTRODUCTION
- We live in an evidence-based society
- “Do not just tell me; show me…”
- How do we assist people today in coming to see Jesus?
THE INITIAL INVITATION
- John the Baptist, “Behold the Lamb of God”
- Two Disciples follow Jesus
- Jesus asks, “What do you seek or want?”
- The Disciples respond, “Where are you staying?”
- Jesus answers, “Come and see”
- The Disciples came and saw
- They remained with Jesus the rest of the day (from 4:00 p.m.)
- Jesus had no permanent residence (Matthew 8:20)
- Emphasis was not on what was there, but who was there – Jesus
- The initial invitation has already been extended to humanity
- Jesus is Emmanuel – “God with us” (Matthew 1:23)
- “The Word became flesh and dwelt among us” (John 1:14)
JESUS MINISTERS TO ME. I INVITE YOU…
- Andrew tells Simon (his brother)
- “We have found the Messiah / Christ
- Andrew brought Simon to Jesus (Come and See)
- Jesus, “Your name is Simon, but you shall be called Cephas (a
stone / Peter)
- Has Jesus ministered to you?
- Are you inviting others to “Come and See”
- It will change who they are…
PEOPLE RECEIVE THE INVITATION BECAUSE OF ME; BUT THEY RECEIVE JESUS BECAUSE OF JESUS
- Peter received and followed Jesus
- Reflect on Peter’s influence in the church
- Who in my sphere of influence needs to “Come and See” Jesus?
- How will they “Come and See” Jesus without me?
CHALLENGE FOR THE WEEK: THAT I WILL INVITE ONE PERSON TO “COME AND SEE” JESUS
