Who Is This Jesus?

“Who Is This Jesus?”

To assist you in spending quality and quantity time with God for this season of Lent, each Sunday, you will receive a weekly Lenten Devotional written from the Gospel of John and based upon our 2018 theme for Lent, “Who Is This Jesus?”

If one really desires to know who Jesus is, the Gospel of John is the perfect place to begin. Whereas the Gospels of Matthew, Mark and Luke tell us what Jesus did, the Gospel of John tells us who Jesus is.

As you read this devotional each day, you will experience the life and ministry of Jesus, gain greater insight into Jesus’ mission for and to humanity and develop and/or strengthen your belief in Him as the Christ, the Son of God.

This Lenten Devotional will also follow the Sunday Sermon Series and the Wednesday evening Lenten Services during Lent. The Sunday Sermon Series are the “7 Signs” of Jesus recorded in the Gospel of John. The Gospel of John has no parables, and has only seven miracles called “signs”. These “signs” are provided to assist the reader in believing that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God (John 20:30, 31). The Wednesday evening Lenten Service Sermons at Progressive Baptist Church are the “7 I Am” statements recorded from Jesus in the Gospel of John regarding His person and purpose, Again, the emphasis of these statements focuses on believing in Jesus as the Christ, Son of God.

My prayer is that this devotional will assist us in developing the disciplines that are necessary as we use the next 40 days to strip and cleanse ourselves of anything ungodly and/or unhealthy. I encourage us to make life-long, lifestyle changes to produce overall, holistic health and well-being (spiritual, mental, emotional, physical, dietary, etc.).

My prayer is that this devotional will also assist us in spending time daily with Jesus, while getting to know who He is through the Gospel of John as we establish and practice spiritual disciplines, as well as positive goals for our lives that we, likewise, will continue after the season of Lent has ended. As we draw closer to Jesus, and grow deeper in our intimacy with Him, may it confirm our belief in Jesus as the Christ, the Son of God, and may it affirm our belief that we have life in Jesus’ name.

During this season of Lent, we are suspending our Wednesday night and Thursday afternoon Bible Study Classes and encouraging everyone to attend one of the Lenten Services. The Lenten Services are as follows:

Wednesday, Noon – Bethesda Baptist Church – 2909 North 20th Street

Wednesday, 7:00 p.m. – Progressive Baptist Church – 8324 West Keefe Ave
