SERMON TEXT: LUKE 7:36-50
SERMON TITLE: HOW MUCH DO I LOVE JESUS? HOW MUCH DO I GIVE? (Pt. III)
SIMON DID THE LEAST
- Simon did not provide water for Jesus’ feet to be washed
- Simon did not give a kiss of greeting to Jesus’ cheek
- Simon did not anoint Jesus’ head with olive oil
THE WOMAN DID THE MOST
- The woman washed Jesus’ feet with her tears and dried them with her hair
- The woman kissed Jesus’ feet repeatedly
- The woman anointed Jesus’ feet with perfumed oil
A. Hosts would anoint the heads of their guest
1. It implied respect and honor – hospitality
2. A person walking in the burning sun of the hot, arid Palestinian environment would welcome soothing oil poured on their head
B. Imagery of Psalm 23:5, “You anoint my head with oil”
C. More than giving Jesus her stuff, she gave Jesus herself
D. The woman did not allow anything to get in between her and her love for Jesus
1. Pride? The woman had nothing for which to be proud…
2. Position? The woman was on the bottom rung of the social ladder…
3. Possessions? The woman gave all that she had (tears, hair, kiss, oil)…
AM I DOING THE LEAST? AM I DOING THE MOST?
Tap water vs. Tears
Kiss on the Cheek vs. Kiss on the feet
Anoint hair with ordinary oil vs. Anoint feet with costly oil
A. Am I giving Jesus my stuff, or am I giving Jesus myself?
B. What have I allowed to get in between me and my love for Jesus?
1. Pride?
2. Position?
3. Possessions?
