TITLE: DEALING WITH DISTRACTIONS? FOLLOW JESUS
TEXT: LUKE 9:57-62
INTRODUCTION
- Distractions – Divert your attention away from the more important thing
- The devil uses distractions – To divert our attention away from God [the more
important thing] to something else [less important] THEN, control the outcome
- It is therefore necessary for us to deal with our distractions and follow Jesus
- Note: The people called Jesus, “Lord”
- Calling Jesus “Lord” does not mean that He is Lord of my life
- Matt 7:21 - 21 “Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ shall enter
the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven.
- Luke 6:46 - 46 “But why do you call Me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and not do the
things which I say?
- To Follow Jesus I must Sacrifice, Prioritize and Commit
SACRIFICE
- 57 Now it happened as they journeyed on the road, that someone said to Him,
“Lord, I will follow You wherever You go.”
- 58 And Jesus said to him, “Foxes have holes and birds of the air have nests, but
the Son of Man has nowhere to lay His head.”
- What am I willing to sacrifice to follow Jesus?
- I cannot stay where I am and follow Jesus…
PRIORITIZE
- 59 Then He said to another, “Follow Me.”
- But he said, “Lord, let me first go and bury my father.”
- 60 Jesus said to him, “Let the dead bury their own dead, but you go and preach
the kingdom of God.”
- Jesus appears to be insensitive…
- It is not a matter of compassion; it is a matter of priority
- We are called to life… (John 6:63-69)
COMMIT
- 61 And another also said, “Lord, I will follow You, but let me first go and bid
them farewell who are at my house.”
- 62 But Jesus said to him, “No one, having put his hand to the plow, and looking
back, is fit for the kingdom of God.”
- If you are not going to do it, do not put your hands on it…
CHALLENGE FOR THE WEEK: THAT I WILL SIT AND LISTEN TO JESUS
