"Conscious and Intentional Ministry: Mending the Broken - Proverbs 17:22 and 18:14"

How Am I Serving Humanity?

HOW AM I SERVING HUMANITY?

The Bible is very clear regarding the service that children of God are required to give to humanity. Jesus lays out the expectation in Mark 10:42-45:

42 But Jesus called them to Himself and said to them, “You know that those who are considered rulers over the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones exercise authority over them. 43 Yet it shall not be so among you; but whoever desires to become great among you shall be your servant. 44 And whoever of you desires to be first shall be slave of all. 45 For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.”

Notice in verse 45 that Jesus uses Himself as the example of service. We would imagine that everyone would have gone out of their way to serve Jesus, and we would imagine that Jesus, being the Son of God, would have welcomed the service that they would have given to Him. Alternatively, Jesus makes it very clear that His coming was not for others to serve Him, rather that He would serve others.

If Jesus, the Son of God, had a ministry of service to humanity, we can be very sure that He expects that we, likewise, will have a ministry of service to humanity. Jesus expresses this point even further when we read the challenge for serving humanity that He shares in Matthew 25:37-40:

37 “Then the righteous will answer Him, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see You hungry and feed You, or thirsty and give You drink? 38 When did we see You a stranger and take You in, or naked and clothe You? 39 Or when did we see You sick, or in prison, and come to You?’ 40 And the King will answer and say to them, ‘Assuredly, I say to you, inasmuch as you did it to one of the least of these My brethren, you did it to Me.’

Yes, you read that right. When we serve humanity, we are serving Jesus. When we do not serve humanity, we are not serving Jesus.

Acknowledging that we now can agree that Jesus expects us to serve humanity. The question becomes, “How am I serving humanity?” This question has to be answered with the understanding that they way that I serve humanity is the way that I serve Jesus.

The sermon series for this month will encourage us to ask ourselves that question, “How am I serving humanity?”

  • Am I serving others in selfishness?
  • Am I serving others for satisfaction?
  • Am I serving others through sacrifice?
